Bernstein first heard and saw Mitropoulos as a recent émigré from Greece when he had given a Boston Symphony Orchestra concert in 1938 which electrified the Harvard graduate student. Mitropoulos took Bernstein under his wing, though the ambitious Bernstein later repaid his kindness by angling to replace him as the head of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. It was Mitropoulos, after all, who is primarily responsible for inspiring Bernstein to become a conductor. Another friend of Mitropoulos, Herbert von Karajan, also was entranced by the way in which music seemed to flow through the Greek conductor and communicate itself to both players and audiences. At Karajan's behest, Mitropoulos became a welcome return guest at the Salzburg Festival in the last years of his life. Mitropoulos exercised a formative influence on the two most dominant conducting egos in the second half of the 20th century. <br><br><span></span></div><a href="http://www.honeyandhemlock.com/2023/12/how-great-spiritual-figures-of-greece.html#more">Read the complete article »</a>Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7356562534452049863.post-21666178179404614122023-10-07T12:55:00.026-04:002023-10-07T14:02:50.660-04:00Artificial Intelligence as Artificial Brilliance (Metr. The literal translation of <i>Εὐφυΐα</i> is the word "brilliance", though it really is another word for intelligence, but the other Greek word for intelligence, <i>Νοημοσύνη, </i>contains the word "nous" or "noetic", which in Orthodox theology is the highest faculty of the human being that has spiritual connotations. This article therefore is about replacing the Greek word <i>Νοημοσύνη </i>with <i>Εὐφυΐα</i>, though in English both mean "intelligence". To understand the difference, I have rendered <i>Εὐφυΐα as "</i>brilliance". It is an important theological discussion, but not applicable in English, so do not think that "Artificial Intelligence" should be replace with "Artificial Brilliance" in English. <b><i><br></i></b></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><b> </b></div><div style="text-align: center;"><b>Artificial Intelligence as Artificial Brilliance</b> <br><br>By Metropolitan Hierotheos of Nafpaktos and Agiou Vlasiou<br></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br>Nowadays, there is a lot of talk not only about Artificial Intelligence, but also about its consequences in our lives. But, due to his lack of commercial success, he is often referred as "the greatest guitarist you've never heard of". May 31st, Maria Menounos shared a moving testimony of her devotion to
Saint Nektarios, after fulfilling a dream by visiting his tomb on the
Greek island of Aegina with her husband. She wrote the following on Instagram, accompanied with
photos:<br /><br />"My trip to greece wasn’t all about island hopping and
fun. I had a mission. I have dreamed about going to Aegina. For those of
you who don’t know about it- Aegina is a small island in the Gulf of
Greece, located just 16 miles southwest of Athens. Saint Nektarios, the
patron saint of the island, was a prominent figure in the Greek Orthodox
Church in the early 20th century and is known for his healing miracles.
Saint Nektarios is considered a patron saint for people who are
suffering from diseases; such as cancer, heart trouble, joint pain,
epilepsy, arthritis and more. Ever since my mom and I were diagnosed
with brain tumors friends would tell us they were going there to pray
for us. We attended St. Nectarios church in California but going to his
church in Greece was always the dream. I wanted to say thank you for all
the miracles and healings we have been blessed with. It was our first
stop on the trip. They say the faithful can hear St. Nectarios in the
tomb. As soon as I kneeled down I heard knocking. Faint knocking noises.
I asked Joanna our friend guiding us if that was him and she said yes.
But I couldn’t believe it. I stayed ear to the tomb for a long time. I
prayed to St. Nectarios and said please make it undeniable. I don’t want
to leave here unsure if I heard you. As I was praying for the people in
my life with cancer I heard a massive bang and started screaming I hear
him! It was definitely undeniable. I sobbed with joy. It was so
emotional as I feel I have such a connection with him and this just made
me feel even more grateful for our connection. I will never forget this
incredibly inspiring moment. I also got to sit on his bed where he used
to live and got the chills. Everyone in our group was moved to tears on
this visit. If you ever go to Greece, add this to your trip. St.
Nectarios helps so many and has granted so many miracles. I like to say
believe in the unbelievable because nothing is too far from possible
when you believe in St. Nectarios. 🙏❤️🇬🇷 "<br /><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><blockquote class="instagram-media" data-instgrm-captioned="" data-instgrm-permalink="https://www.instagram.com/p/Cs6aST5pOs2/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading" data-instgrm-version="14" style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); dangerous forms of cancer, back in January 2023, just a month before
she was to publicly announce her first child via a surrogate. She
credits her faith in God and the healing power of Saint Nektarios for
her miraculous delivery, since she is now cancer free, and will be soon
welcoming the birth of her baby.<br /><br />Of
course, Maria was not unfamiliar with Saint Nektarios before this
incident. She placed her faith in the miraculous powers of Saint
Nektarios even as far back as 2016, when her mother was diagnosed with
brain cancer. Some months later, in 2017, she also was found to have a
benign tumor in her brain, which was removed after a successful surgery,
and she then began a mission in life to help people with their health,
since she considered her healing a gift of God and was grateful to Saint
Nektarios.<br /><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><blockquote class="instagram-media" data-instgrm-captioned="" data-instgrm-permalink="https://www.instagram.com/p/BJ82fLIgtyX/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading" data-instgrm-version="14" style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); should be noted that notable Hollywood stars liked Maria's moving post
about Saint Nektarios, including non-Greeks like Sylvester Stallone and
Johnny Knoxville. With the recent appearance of Mickey Rourke in the
successful 2021 drama film <i>Man of God</i> about the life of Saint Nektarios, it appears
that he is becoming more and more known throughout the world.<br /><br />In the video interview below, Maria said the following in Greek:<br /><br />"It
was a difficult battle I fought with cancer, but I see other people for
whom it is tougher. Saint Nektarios helped me in my battle with cancer,
I am very lucky. In my adventure I had my dad and my husband by my side
who helped me.”<br /><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/lp97yXfWmGs" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; I write “I suppose,” though I know for a fact that I have made it up, but yet I keep fancying that it must have happened on Christmas Eve in some great town in a time of terrible frost.<br><br>I have a vision of a boy, a little boy, six years old or even younger. This boy woke up that morning in a cold damp cellar. He was dressed in a sort of little dressing-gown and was shivering with cold. There was a cloud of white steam from his breath, and sitting on a box in the corner, he blew the steam out of his mouth and amused himself in his dullness watching it float away. But he was terribly hungry. Several times that morning he went up to the plank bed where his sick mother was lying on a mattress as thin as a pancake, with some sort of bundle under her head for a pillow. How had she come here? She must have come with her boy from some other town and suddenly fallen ill. The landlady who let the “concerns” had been taken two days before the police station, the lodgers were out and about as the holiday was so near, and the only one left had been lying for the last twenty-four hours dead drunk, not having waited for Christmas. In another corner of the room a wretched old woman of eighty, who had once been a children’s nurse but was now left to die friendless, was moaning and groaning with rheumatism, scolding and grumbling at the boy so that he was afraid to go near her corner. He had got a drink of water in the outer room, but could not find a crust anywhere, and had been on the point of waking his mother a dozen times. He felt frightened at last in the darkness: it had long been dusk, but no light was kindled. Touching his mother’s face, he was surprised that she did not move at all, and that she was as cold as the wall. “It is very cold here,” he thought. He stood a little, unconsciously letting his hands rest on the dead woman’s shoulders, then he breathed on his fingers to warm them, and then quietly fumbling for his cap on the bed, he went out of the cellar. He would have gone earlier, but was afraid of the big dog which had been howling all day at the neighbor’s door at the top of the stairs. But the dog was not there now, and he went out into the street.<br><br><span></span></div><a href="http://www.honeyandhemlock.com/2022/12/the-beggar-boy-at-christs-christmas.html#more">Read the complete article »</a>Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7356562534452049863.post-16193334109568983412022-12-15T13:00:00.005-05:002022-12-15T13:00:28.280-05:00Christianity and Socialism (Hieromartyr Hilarion Troitsky)<div style="text-align: center;"><b><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFS-gA5Ti2WpIj-4-3eiE-WhfIa69KNaAeNku_nWDUM81dYBHpJNryfHTmbWhjSSsubmrgX4L71QEpH_--IuEuOmeS4e-XyjYnLSQnHTUQqhA_KQsypcdDbnuKdQrrw4-az6XFmoMmYOU4dGXZ76KZ2jTnCrbocJyeeZG_01YJMxac24Fs3Vb7prKO/s768/hilarion.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="768" data-original-width="636" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFS-gA5Ti2WpIj-4-3eiE-WhfIa69KNaAeNku_nWDUM81dYBHpJNryfHTmbWhjSSsubmrgX4L71QEpH_--IuEuOmeS4e-XyjYnLSQnHTUQqhA_KQsypcdDbnuKdQrrw4-az6XFmoMmYOU4dGXZ76KZ2jTnCrbocJyeeZG_01YJMxac24Fs3Vb7prKO/w331-h400/hilarion.jpg" width="331"></a></div> <br></b></div><div style="text-align: center;"><b> Christianity and Socialism</b></div><div style="text-align: center;"> </div><div style="text-align: left;"><div style="text-align: center;">By the New Hieromartyr Hilarion (Troitsky) [+1928]
</div><p style="text-align: center;">[Note: This was a pamphlet St. Hilarion published in the
intervening years between the failed 1905 Revolution and the unhappy 1917 Revolution.]</p>
<p><i><span>People <em>swear</em> by someone greater than themselves</span> (Heb. 6:16).</i></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">This truth remains ever and everywhere immutable. Any single truth or any series of truths
always comprise what is “greater” for man, and this “greater” is
man’s authority; he refers to it, he “swears” by it. Yet the same truths are
not what is “greater” for all men. Sometimes what is “greater” is
entirely false; yet man nevertheless swears by this illusory “truth” as though it
were authoritative. The measures by which men approach the phenomena of the life which surrounds
us are quite varied. Each chooses that authority which seems best to him, and therefore one may
accept the position: Tell me what your authorities are, and I will say what sort of man you are.
In the past, men were different, and their authorities were also different. The word of God, the
laws of the Church - in the past these were the eternally immutable and perfect authorities
understood and held dear equally by all. If something were in accordance with the word of God,
with the laws of the Church, it was good; if something were not in accordance with them, or
contradicted them, it could not be good. I. T. Pososhkov wrote his “A Father’s
Testament” precisely “to corroborate the divine Scriptures”; there he states
with certainty: “All of us who live in the Orthodox Faith know this well: that all truth is
contained in the words of the Lord”; and to his son he says: “My son, I firmly exhort
and adjure thee, that with all thy strength thou hold fast to the Holy Eastern Church as the
Mother who gave thee birth... and that thou cut off from thyself all who oppose the Holy Church,
and have no amicable relations with them of any sort, for they are the enemies of God.”</p>
